East Lake Sylvia

A targeted survey of nearshore fish species in East Lake Sylvia was conducted on July 21, 2025, by Sauk Rapids fisheries staff. Sampling sites were evenly spaced around the lake and each was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot or 15-foot seine, where possible. Backpack electrofishing was completed at 12 sampling stations, but two stations were sampled from the boat due to site conditions. Similarly, a 50-foot seine was used to sample eight stations, a 15-foot seine was used at five stations, and site conditions prevented the use of seines at one station. Nearshore sampling captured 20 species of fish including six species that are intolerant of disturbance (i.e., Banded Killifish, Blackchin Shiner, Blacknose Shiner, Iowa Darter, Pugnose Shiner and Rock Bass) and one that is tolerant of disturbance (Green Sunfish). The nearshore data were combined with trap net and gill net data from a survey to describe the fish community and provide a Fish-based IBI (FIBI) score. The FIBI uses fish community data to measure a lake's health, and the types of fish species present can help identify any stressors that may be negatively affecting the lake environment. In Minnesota lakes, certain fish species cannot survive without clean water and a healthy habitat (e.g., Blackchin Shiner and Least Darter), while other species are tolerant of degraded conditions (e.g., Black Bullhead and Common Carp). The FIBI score, composed of several fish community diversity and composition metrics, indicates the overall health of a lake by comparing it to what is expected for a healthy lake. Data from this survey suggests that East Lake Sylvia is in good health as indicated by the FIBI score that exceeds the threshold for aquatic life use determined for similar lakes. Data from this survey will contribute biological information about the health of the fish community to the North Fork Crow River Watershed assessment process in coordination with MN Pollution Control Agency.

Reduced bag limits for sunfish (10 fish daily) and crappie (5 fish daily) were introduced for East Sylvia Lake beginning March 1, 2021. A targeted panfish (sunfish and crappie) assessment was conducted on East Lake Sylvia from May 27-30, 2025, to collect post regulation data. A total of 390 Bluegill were caught; lengths ranged from 3 to 10 inches with an average length of 7 inches. Eighty-three percent of the Bluegill sampled with 6 inches or longer with 25% being 8 inches or longer. Bluegill grew to 6 inches in 6 years, which is slower than the statewide average growth rate, but is similar to the Sauk Rapids Area average growth. Only five Black Crappie were caught on East Sylvia, compared to 112 caught in the pre regulation survey from 2021. Lengths ranged from 10 to 14 inches with an average length of 12 inches. The lower catch rate may have been due to the later date of the survey in 2025 compared to 2021 (April 26-30). A total of 365 Pumpkinseed Sunfish were caught, which is over 4 times as many as were caught in 2021 (81). Lengths ranged from 5 to 9 inches with an average length of 7 inches. The Hybrid Sunfish catch for 2025 (264) was similar to the last survey in 2021 (237) with lengths ranging from 5 to 10 inches and an average length of 8 inches. Bluegill grow slowly in the Sauk Rapids Area, taking over 8 years to reach 8 inches. We encourage anglers to limit their harvest of larger Bluegill (> 8 inches) and keep smaller fish for a meal to help prevent stunted populations of small fish and keep larger Bluegill available.

In order to collect additional pre regulation data, a targeted Bluegill and Black Crappie assessment was conducted on East Lake Sylvia from April 26 - 30, 2021. A total of 524 Bluegill were caught; lengths ranged from 4 - 10 inches with an average length of 7 inches. Eighty-four percent of the Bluegill sampled were longer than six inches and 28% were longer than eight inches. These results are above average for both fish greater than six inches and eight inches. One hundred twelve Back Crappie were also caught on East Sylvia; lengths ranged from 4 - 14 inches with an average length of 10 inches. For East Sylvia Lake, 92% of the crappie caught were eight inches or longer while 65% of the catch were 10 inches or longer. A total of 81 Pumpkinseed Sunfish were also caught and ranged in length from 3 - 9 inches and averaged 7 inches; 237 hybrid sunfish were also caught and ranged in length from 5 - 10 inches, with an average length of 8 inches. Bluegill grow slowly in the Sauk Rapids Area, taking up to 8 years to reach 8 inches. Anglers are encouraged to limit their harvest of larger Bluegill (> 8 inches) and keep smaller fish for a meal. This can help prevent stunted populations of small fish and keep larger Bluegill available.
