Grass

Grass is a 45.5 acre lake 6 miles east of the town of Jenkins in Crow Wing County. A DNR administered earthen access is provided on the south shore, with limited parking that is shared with the Clear Lake Access across the street. Largemouth Bass is the primary management species, with Northern Pike listed as a secondary management species. A standard survey using gill nets and trap nets was conducted in August 2025 to assess fish populations and provide angler information. Largemouth Bass electrofishing was not done, but fish were caught in average numbers in both gill nets (1.0 per net) and trap nets (0.8 per net). Size was not great, with fish ranging from 8.5 to 13.7 inches. The Northern Pike catch was low (4.0 per net) for this type of lake. Average size was better than most lakes in this area at 24.1 inches. With fish ranging from 19.5 to 29.9 inches, anglers have a decent chance at some medium sized Pike. Black Crappie numbers were on the low side in both gill nets (1.5 per net) and trap nets (1.3 per net), but the size showed promise. With 75 percent of the fish over 10 inches and fish up to 11.6 inches present, anglers could catch some quality Crappies. Anglers should exercise restraint if they choose to keep some fish. A lake this size could easily become over exploited. Bluegill numbers were average (7.0 per net) and size was not great. The largest fish was 7.5 inches and only 20% of the Bluegills were over 7.0 inches. Other fish species sampled included Bowfin (Dogfish), Brown Bullhead, Hybrid Sunfish, Yellow Bullhead, and Yellow Perch.

Grass Lake has a high population of northern pike, yellow bullhead, pumpkinseed and bluegill for lake class 36. A low population was indicated for brown bullhead and yellow perch, while netting indicated an average population of largemouth bass. Ages two thru seven were represented among the northern pike sampled with all ages exhibiting average growth rates. Length-frequency ranged from 16 to 29 inches with balanced distribution. Bluegills sampled indicated slow growth rates although individual size was average for comparable lakes. Length frequency ranged from 3 to 6 inches with the 4-inch group representing 64% of the sample. A low population of yellow perch was indicated by the test netting. Average growth rates are exhibited by the fish sampled and aged. A high population of yellow bullheads was present with average individual sizes.

Northern Pike population is excellent but most fish are of small size. However, there are considerable numbers of large fish as well. Bluegill population is stable and is kept under control by the Northern Pike. Smallmouth Bass taken in net is probably a result of private stocking of lake by resident.
